Conquer Any Climb: Essential Tips for Mastering Hills on Your Bike
Taming Hills on Your Ride: Essential Tips for Cyclists
Ever been cruising along on a beautiful ride, only to be greeted rudely by a seemingly endless hill that you never saw coming and find yourself gasping for air, your legs screaming at you as your friends are pedaling away? You're not alone. It's a rite of passage for every cyclist.
Last week, Jill reached out to me with a request. Many cyclists are apprehensive about hills, and she wanted to know how we can best disseminate information to novice cyclists and triathletes to help them overcome this challenge and achieve success.
Alright, let's talk hills. Those pesky uphill climbs that can turn a leisurely ride into a heart-pumping challenge. But don't worry, we're here to help you conquer those suckers!
We know some of you all are a beast on the peloton. But when it comes to riding outside - sudden changes in elevation can snatch your joy. Whether you're facing rolling countryside roads or sudden steep inclines, we've got tips and tricks to make hill climbing less of a drag and more of a thrill.
Challenges of Cycling Uphill
Why Hills Are Tough
Hills are the cyclist's kryptonite. They're those pesky inclines that turn your leisurely ride into a grueling workout. Gravity's got a personal vendetta against cyclists, pulling you back like a stubborn mule. And don't even get us started on headwinds on climbs or long inclines - it's like trying to pedal through a brick wall!
Beyond the physical challenge, hills can also be mentally draining. The constant battle against gravity and the seemingly endless climb can test your resolve. But fear not! With the right mindset and strategies, you can overcome these obstacles and enjoy the exhilaration of conquering the hill.
Alright, let's get real about climbing hills. First off, everyone climbs differently. Even if you're all pedaling at the same speed on flat ground, hit a hill, and poof - everyone's pace changes. And guess what? It's totally normal to slow down on climbs. Your body isn't a car; it can't magically maintain the same speed uphill as it does on flat ground. So, cut yourself some slack and embrace the slower pace!
Now, let's talk hill climbing tactics:
Find your gear: Pick a gear that lets you spin comfortably (around 70-90 RPM) without grinding your legs to a pulp. What is cadence? It’s how fast or how many revolutions (spins) you make around the wheel in a minute. Think short, easy pedal strokes when climbing. Use your front & rear gears to get you to an easy gear setup to keep spinning and not mashing/grinding.
Pace yourself: Don't blow all your energy at the start. Start steady and gradually increase your effort as you climb.
Master your form: Keep your core tight, back straight, and shoulders relaxed. This helps you transfer power efficiently. Use your glutes. See video explanation below.
Understand the climb: Not all climbs are created equal. Some are short and steep, while others are long and gradual. Adjust your strategy accordingly. For those long, gradual climbs, focus on finding a sustainable pace and maintaining your effort.
Breathe easy: Deep breaths and a relaxed body are key. Tense muscles are energy vampires.
Build momentum: Use the flat sections to gain speed before hitting those steep climbs.
Enjoy the reward: What goes up, usually goes down. Once you reach the top, the downhill rewards are fun, and you gain back free speed.
It's OK to walk your bike up a hill. Forward is a motion, and there are some impossible climbs even for experienced cyclists. Use it as motivation to do better next time by training or adding in drills and strength training.
Embrace the challenge: Regular hill climbing can help desensitize you to the fear factor. Frequency kills fear and builds competency when riding hills and tackling climbs. #ridehillsforbreakfast

Mental Grit: Conquering Hills Starts in Your Head
“I don’t stop when I’m tired. I stop when I’m done.” – David Goggins
Believe it or not, conquering hills starts in your head. . It's a mental game as much as a physical one. Sure, it's tough when you're staring up at a seemingly endless climb, but remember, the toughest battles are often won in the mind. If your head's not in the game, that uphill grind can feel like climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops.
Visualize your cycling victory! Picture yourself powering up that hill, feeling strong and confident. Imagine the sense of accomplishment as you reach the summit. This mental rehearsal can boost your motivation and help you push through the tough parts.
Find your mantra or motivational phrase. Whether it's a powerful quote, a personal affirmation, or a playful taunt, having a go-to phrase can be a game-changer. Yell it out, repeat it in your head, or silently mouth it to yourself. Some cyclists find inspiration in phrases like "I got this," "Be a savage," or even "Shut up legs."
Employ a mental trick. Counting can be a powerful tool to distract your mind from the physical challenge. Focusing on numbers can shift your attention away from negative thoughts and help you maintain a steady pace.
“It is what it is. But it will be what you make it.” – Pat Summitt
So, how do you win the mental game? Stay positive, focus on the reward at the top, and remember, every pedal stroke gets you closer to the summit.
